Safe Guarding Children

'Children learn best when they are healthy, safe & secure. Providers must take necessary steps to keep all children safe & well.' (EYFS 2012)

We have a duty to be aware that abuse does occur in our society. Due to the many hours of care that we provide, our staff will often be the first to notice any problems, they may also be the first people in whom children confide about abuse.

The child protection statement lays out the procedures that we will follow if we have any reason to believe that a child in our care is subject to emotional, physical or sexual abuse or neglect.

Our first responsibility must be the welfare of the child and we have a duty to children, parents/carers and staff to act quickly and responsibly to any instance that comes to our attention. Under guidelines we must respond to any child protection concerns within 14 days.

We have a duty to report any suspicions of abuse or neglect to the Front Door For Families (FDFF) on 01273 290400 or mashfrontdoorfamilies@brighton-hove.gcsx.gov.uk. Contact number for local police is 0845 60 70 999 and social services is 01273 296000.

Staff should respond appropriately to any;

  • Significant changes in children's behaviour
  • Deterioration in their general well-being
  • Unexplained bruising, marks or signs of possible abuse
  • Signs of neglect
  • Comments children make which give cause for concern
  • Any reasons to suspect neglect or abuse outside the setting
  • Inappropriate behaviour displayed by other members of staff, or any other person working with the children. Such as sexual comments, excessive 1-1 attention and the sharing of inappropriate or intrusive photos.
  • Report any concerns about any inappropriate or intrusive photos found.

Our named Safeguarding children Officer is Hannah Moss.
Our assistant safeguarding officer is Georgia Nicholas.
They have attended the appropriate 3 day advanced training.They update their training every 2 years
Our guidance for this document is 'What to do if a Child is being abused advice for practitioners' (March 2015). We have a copy of this document for staff & parents to familiarise themselves with. We also comply with the Pan Sussex CP & Safeguarding Procedures as per the Brighton and Hove Local Safeguarding Children's Board (LSCB)

The safeguarding officer is responsible for liaising with local statutory children's services agencies, and linking up with the LSCB (local safeguarding children board). The lead practitioner will provide support, advice & guidance to other staff on an ongoing basis and in particular if any safeguarding issues arise.

Parents are always the first person we would talk to about any concerns unless we thought that doing so would put the child at a significant risk of harm.

  1. Physical abuse.
    If staff have definite knowledge or reasonable suspicion that a physical injury, including deliberate poisoning, has been inflicted or knowingly not prevented, then action will be taken. The procedure regarding physical injuries is:
    • Any mark/injury on arrival in the nursery will be recorded and signed by both parent and staff.
    • The incident will be discussed and any such discussion recorded. Parents will have access to all records.
    • If there appear to be any queries regarding the incident then it will be referred to FDFF.
  2. Sexual abuse.
    If staff have witnessed occasions where a child has indicated sexual activity through words, play, drawing or has an excessive pre-occupation with sexual matters or an inappropriate knowledge of adult sexual behaviour then action will be taken. The procedure regarding sexual abuse is:
    • The observed instances will be reported to the nursery manager.
    • Concerns would be discussed with parents, if appropriate.
    • The matter will be referred to FDFF.
  3. Emotional abuse.
    If staff have reason to believe that there is a severe, adverse affect on the behaviour and emotional development of a child caused by persistent or severe ill treatment or rejection then action will be taken. The procedure regarding emotional abuse is:
    • Any concerns will be discussed with parent and any such discussions recorded. Parents will have access to all records.
    • If there appear to be any queries regarding the circumstances, the matter will be referred to FDFF.
  4. Neglect.
    If staff have reason to believe that there has been persistent or severe neglect of a child (for example, by exposure to any kind of danger, including cold and starvation) which results in serious impairment of the child's health or development then action will be taken. The procedure regarding neglect is:
    • Any concerns will be discussed with parent and any such discussions recorded. Parents will have access to all records.
    • If there appear to be any queries regarding the circumstances, the matter will be referred to FDFF.

Prevent Duty

All early years organisations are required to comply with the Prevent Duty guidance, ehich came into force in July 2015. The Prevent Duty requires providers to work with outside agencies & have due regard to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. Providers also need to ensure they promote British values ( see seperate Promoting british values policy). Staff have recieved training & development on how to recognise the signs & symptoms and how to support & promote British values.

If staff have reason to believe that a child or family is in danger of being drawn into terrorism then action would be taken

- Note factual signs & symptoms and discuss with a parent. Any such discussion would be recorded.

- If there are any quiries then the matter would be reffered to the FDFF.

- Staff may call MASH for advice on how to deal with the situation.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is an illegal practice in the UK & for all UK citizens. FGM is a form of child abuse and we will follow our normal safeguarding procedures. Where appropriate we will discuss the matter with parents. We will refer any concerns to the FDFF. The NSPCC helpline for FGM is 08000283550 / fgmhelp@nspcc.org.uk

It is a criminal offence to be under the influence of drink or drugs while in charge of a minor. If staff have any concerns regarding this they will refer immediately to the FDFF and police will be notified

- Practitioners at Footsteps Day Nursery use a chronology sheet to record any child protection concerns. This can include contact from parents, children or other professionals. It could include details of any disclosures made. This is kept on the child's file and added to over time if necessary. The recording of information is always shared with paents. Parents can view their child's file at any time.

- We record all accidents in the setting. We also record home accidents. If a chaild has more then 3 home accidents then we review and take appropriate action if needed. We would always speak to parents before any action was taken. Accident forms are reviewed each term as part of the risk assessment

In any instance, should a member of staff have any concerns for the welfare of the child then they should inform their senior. Staff's responsibilities do not include investigating the suspected abuse. Staff will keep accurate records of any observations in connection with suspected abuse. We feel it is very important to always listen to children. Our staff receive training on the safeguarding of children from abuse. It is our policy to provide a secure and safe environment for all children.
Our aims are to:

  • Ensure that children are never placed at risk while in the charge of the nursery staff.
  • Ensure that all the staff are familiar with child protection issues and procedures.
  • Regularly review and update this policy.

If the Manager fails to respond to staff concerns & worries, then the staff member may go over her head & talk to FDFF.

If an allegation is made against a member of staff, the following procedure will be followed.

  • The Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) will be contacted this is: Darel Clews 01273 295643/07795335879.
  • We follow the advice & guidence of the LADO when dealing with any allegations against staff. This may include suspending a member of staff on full pay while the matter is investigated.
  • OFSTED will then be notified.

If an allegation is made against a manager or owner then the staff should refer this directly to FDFF and OFSTED.

All our staff attend Safeguarding children training courses. This is updated every 3 years. All staff recieve online Prevent training. We hold an annual Safeguarding staff meeting to review policy & update knowledge.
All our staff are DBS & reference checked.
Volunteers and unvetted staff do not work unsupervised.
We have procedures for recording the details of any visitors to the setting.
No unauthorised person has access to the setting.
We are signed up to receive safeguarding updates & alerts from the Local safeguarding children board (LSCB) via email.
